M. Edward Wilson photograph album, 1900.

This collection consists of a photograph album containing fifteen images taken by Savannah photographs M. Edward Wilson on March 20, 1900, of the Barracouta, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kelly, their crew, and the U.S.S. Hamilton. The images were taken during Admiral George Dewey's voyage on the yacht. Admiral Dewey, naval hero of Maila Bay, Philippine Islands in 1898, visited Savannah, Georgia, on March 20, 1900. Dewey, having arrived in the city the previous evening, was greeted by patriotic crowds and escorted to the U.S.S. Hamilton, where he was to take a cruise down the Savannah River, touring several sites, including the quarantine station and Fort Screven. While on board the Hamilton, Dewey became ill and could not continue the cruise. He was transferred to the private yacht, Barracouta, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kelly of New York, and escorted back to the city to recuperate (for more information, see Savannah Morning News, March 20-22, 1900).
